This is a copy/paste of the post made by my tuner on mr2oc.com about Hyde's dyno session today:
[quote="NoShoes"]Today was a fun day! Boost creep and clutch slippage contributes to a healthy 3S-GTE reality diet! Yay!
Please keep in mind that these are preliminary numbers. There are still several things that need to be addressed:
1) Wastegate boost creep issues (It creeps to 27 psi by redline) 2) A single disc clutch that just won't get things done at this level 3) The ignition timing map (I'm still running timing values that were more suited to the engine in this thread: http://www.mr2oc.com/showthread.php?t=178295 ) 4) The a/f is still not cleaned up to my liking (I prefer to run 12.2-12.4:1 on Sonoco 110......it has a higher specific gravity than pump pee water, thus needed less parts fuel per parts air) 5) I did not get the chance to move the cam gears around. The intake cam is retarded 8 degrees of crank rotation (at 110btdc) from the intake cam from last year.
All that being said the engine did tremendously well. There are no really odd noises other than a little valvetrain noise. (I'll be re-shimming this motor later on).
When dealing with boost creep in this situation, I instructed Jeff each pass to allow for a little higher boost, and a little higher rpms. We finally found the boost leveled off at 27psi near 8300.
When a car has a boost creep problem like this, I find the highest it creeps to, and determine whether or not I feel comfortable tuning at that boost level. On Hyde, I have no problems with up to 30 psi, so I had Jeff add duty cycle into his boost controller so we could get to 27 psi for the full pull. We only got to 23 psi, so the pull posted below is 23 psi creeping to 27 psi at 8300 rpm.
On the next pull, we got 25 psi when the wastegate opened, but the clutch failed. It's now time for a twin disc setup of some sort. Jeff and I have several options lined up so he can hit the time attack event in May.
Here's the video:

Here's the dyno, compared to last season's run at 22psi. The uncorrected number is 554.

The car's curb weight is about 2650. With me inside it comes to about 2820.
Typically people refer to a fast street car having a weight-to-power ratio of 10:1 In MR2s, they look for 300 rwhp in a 3000 lbs car (mine's been lightened).
I think the really fast open wheel cars that run the hill climbs have a ratio of roughly 8:1.
Last year, at 440 rwhp we had a ratio of 6.4:1.
We are now sitting at: 4.9:1. That's some crazy stuff right there. |

Great numbers Jeff! My question is: this power rate is right for drag race, but what's your mind about road race?
My experience with TiJey is stock brakes are not enough to run on track. Bend after bend, mile after mile, your brake gets weak. My opinion is our 91 rotors and calipers are absolutely inadequate for road race use. Get a look at http://www.tij-mr2.com/clips/Pergusa%2026-03-2006%20bagarre.avi and you'll understand what I mean...
I think chassis is a limit too, it seems to me too soft. Autopower rollbar helps me and makes car more stiff, but probably is still not enough.
I'm curious to hear your mind about these point when you'll run Time Attack event.
Bye!

** If someone wants to move this thread into one of teh technical or tuning forums, that would be fine. I can't read Italian and was not sure where to post this.
Hey Dario, The goal of Hyde has always been total performance so drag racing is far from our only concern. In fact, you will see me drag racing less and less as this power level indicates that each run will be an exercise in trying not to break something. :(
I feel that this power level will work for road racing, it's just going to take a serious level of respect.
The brake issue you and I discussed a bit before and I am not at a point where I am going dozens of laps. Even with the Time Attack, we are only looking to do 2 or 3 "hot laps" so I think my brakes will be fine. The hillclimbs that I do are 1 o 2 minutes long and brakes have not been an issue (when they are working properly!). I'm downloading that video now.
Chassis stiffenss I have addressed so far with a 6-point rollbar, the Full Race traction bar (highly recommend this - especialyl if you manual steering!). I have 2 strut tower bars in the front, none in the rear (yet) and the ST sway bars. Obviously I am using a lowered spring and tighter struts. I want to get my roll bar converted into a cage.
Please note that the Time Attack is in 2 weeks and if I do not get a clutch installed by then that can hold this kind of power, we are NOT racing. There's simply no way to put the power down. :( |

Jeff, your post is right here, don't worry. International forum was made just for people don't speak or understand italian.
Yes, we discussed about brake efficiency of stock system and you replied me Hyde was right on hill climb races. I experienced good results too with hill climb test using Porterfield R4 pads, Goodridge lines and Powerslot rotors. Adding my results with yours I imagined I would not have had problems on road race, cause also events I run consist on three laps for every session. The matter is on hill climb gravity force help us to brake and distort the truth.
Now, at present my power rate on road race with 98 pump gas is near 300 WHP@16 psi, a little conservative but I hope safe and with this kind of power I reached easy 140 mph at Pergusa (you can look this track on Gtr Fia PC game ). Any brake was a nightmare after two lap and anyway also at beginning I had to brake many meters before Porsche Carrera. This with 300 WHP and 140 mph top speed, I imagine Hyde will be a little bit faster...
My conclusion is stock brake system was weak spot of TiJey, I think is a common trouble on rev1 MKII but I'll be glad to hear you get no problems on your next race with new Hyde.
News from TiJey. How you know I installed Rotora rear and front kits, a joke of over 3000 bucks. The problem is new calipers are too close the rims, so I had to make wheel spacers and buy new longer screws. Well, another bad joke: today I payed 150 euros for spacers and 240 euros for twenty bastard wheel screws...
TiJey is making me poor
Well, I'll cross my fingers for your new clutch Hope listen you soon!
